NYU Game Center
Game Designer / Arts Professor
I am a game designer and an Arts Professor in the Game Design Department at New York University. A 30-year veteran of the game industry, I have created award-winning games on and off the computer. Highlights of my career include founding and running Gamelab, a 30-person studio that created hit games enjoyed by millions of players online and also garnered the MacArthur Foundation’s first major game-related grant; with architect Nathalie Pozzi creating large-scale physical games exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and other venues in Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Dublin, and Moscow; co-founding the Institute of Play, a non-profit that has created public schools in New York City and Chicago based on games and play as the model for learning across the curriculum. I also have a scholarly career, and in addition to lectures, workshops, and keynotes around the world, I co-authored Rules of Play, the standard textbook in game design (MIT Press 2004). My next book is The Rules We Break (Princeton Architectural Press, 2022).
